I’ll be there for you
A lot of people comment on how we were there for Spencer. I even wrote a blog post about it.
But, the thing is, Spencer was there for us too...before he was even born.
As many of you know, last August, just past her 1st birthday, Kenzie had open heart surgery.
It was, at the time the scariest thing we had ever gone through. Hell, we expected it to be the scariest, hardest thing we would ever go through as parents. We figured anything after it had to be easier.
Jokes on us for that.
But, you see, the day before her surgery, we got a call about Spencer. Who I was barely 3 mos pregnant with at the time. Because stress+pregnancy=perfect combination.
But, anyway- the day before surgery, we get a call.
It was our call confirming all the bloodwork had checked out. Spencer was healthy, and the genetics looked good. (Yeah. another joke on us.) At the time, this was great news. We had no reason to believe anything other than the baby I was carrying was happy and healthy.
It was also during this call we learned I was pregnant with a boy! A BOY!! I looked at my husband and was practically in tears. Kenzie was in the car with us, fast asleep after all her pre-op bloodwork. It had been an exhausting day, but we were having a boy.
In that moment, Spencer gave us the distraction we desperately needed, going into Kenzies surgery.
The day of her surgery, Dan (my husband) and I snuck down to the gift shop while all our family was in the surgical waiting room. We grabbed an 'it's a boy' teddy bear. When we went back to the waiting room, we tossed the bear at Dan's dad, and waited for it to register.
What had been a somewhat solemn waiting room, turned into hugs and smiles. Jokes about little brothers and how the grandparents were so excited for a grandson. Spencer had the timing perfect to give everyone a boost. To be there for everyone, when he hadn't even arrived yet.
It was like he knew his time here would be short, and he needed his time growing with me, to matter too.
So, thank you Spencer- your family needed you, and you were there. I hope we were there for you as much as you were there for us.
Love, Mom, Dad and Kenzie...oh and Kooza.
